Sonoma-Marin Tree Service connects Rohnert Park and Cotati homeowners with local tree service contractors for removals, pruning, stump grinding, and storm cleanup. Rohnert Park's tree rules exempt most yard trees on single-family lots, but not every tree: the details depend on whether the tree is in your yard or in the street planting strip.
Rohnert Park tree rules: when a permit applies
Trees on private property may be covered by the city's Tree Preservation and Protection rules, Zoning Code Chapter 17.15, in effect since May 2007. According to the city's own handout, these situations do not need a tree removal permit:
- Removing any tree on a residential lot that is fully developed with a detached single-family home
- Pruning that follows current ISA standards
- Removing certain species: acacia, tree of heaven, eucalyptus, liquidambar, Monterey pine, poplar, and privet
- Removing a tree the City's Arborist finds is badly located and must go to protect property, or is a threat to public safety
- Removing orchard trees
Where a permit is needed, such as on a vacant lot, a condo or apartment property, or a site being developed, the application includes a site plan, photos, and a letter or report on the tree's health and condition from a certified arborist. Applications go to the City Arborist, adjacent owners are notified, and approved removals must be replaced with new trees or an in-lieu fee. See arborist reports and tree permits for what that report covers. If you are not sure which category your lot is in, call Rohnert Park Development Services first.
Street trees are different
Trees in the planting strip between the sidewalk and the street are street trees, and the city requires a permit before they are altered or removed, under Municipal Code Chapter 12.24. That applies even if you water and care for the tree. Contact Rohnert Park Public Works before pruning, removing, or grinding the stump of a street tree, and do not let a contractor start on one without that sign-off.
Common tree problems in Rohnert Park yards
Much of Rohnert Park was built as a planned community from the 1960s on, with neighborhoods laid out in lettered sections and trees planted at the same time. Decades later, those trees are often too big for small front and back yards. The usual jobs:
- Liquidambar and other surface-rooted trees lifting sidewalks, driveways, and patios. Removing the tree is only half the job; stump grinding and root cleanup let you repair the hardscape.
- Pines and eucalyptus that have grown far taller than the house. Both drop heavy limbs in winter wind and are on the city's exempt species list for permits.
- Limbs over the roof that drop debris into gutters and rub shingles. See roof clearance and limb removal.
- Roots in sewer laterals, common with older clay lines and thirsty trees planted close to the house.
Most of these are better solved with tree trimming and pruning if the tree is healthy and the problem is the canopy, not the roots.
Working on flat, tight lots
Flat ground makes Rohnert Park removals simpler than in the hills, but lots are small and houses close together, so most trees are taken down in sections with ropes rather than dropped in one piece. Side-yard gates and fences limit equipment, and overhead service drops are common. Ask the contractor how they will get the wood out and whether the price includes hauling, cleanup, and grinding.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree from my Rohnert Park home?
Usually not, if the tree is on a residential lot fully developed with a detached single-family home. The city handout lists that as an exemption under Zoning Code Chapter 17.15. Street trees, vacant lots, and other property types are different, so confirm with Rohnert Park Development Services if you are unsure.
Can I remove the street tree in front of my house?
Not without the city. Street trees require a permit from the City before they are altered or removed. Contact Rohnert Park Public Works first.
Are eucalyptus and pine trees protected in Rohnert Park?
The city lists eucalyptus and Monterey pine, along with acacia, tree of heaven, liquidambar, poplar, and privet, as species whose removal does not require a tree removal permit.
Does a tree removal in Rohnert Park include the stump?
Not always. Many quotes cut the trunk close to the ground and price grinding separately. If you plan to replant, pour concrete, or fix a lifted walkway, ask for grinding and surface-root removal in the written scope.
